Each port listing includes the UN/LOCODE, port type, annual capacity, coordinates and a link to track live vessel arrivals and departures.
A UN/LOCODE (United Nations Code for Trade and Transport Locations) is a unique 5-character identifier assigned to ports, airports and trade locations worldwide. The first two characters identify the country (e.g. NL for Netherlands), and the last three identify the specific location (e.g. RTM for Rotterdam). UN/LOCODEs are used in shipping documents, Bills of Lading and AIS destination data.
Ports are classified by the type of cargo they handle. Container ports handle standardized shipping containers measured in TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units). Bulk cargo ports handle loose commodities like grain, coal, iron ore and fertilizers. Tanker terminals are dedicated to loading and discharging crude oil, refined petroleum products and LNG. Ro-Ro ports handle roll-on/roll-off cargo such as vehicles and heavy machinery. Passenger ports and ferry terminals serve cruise ships and short-sea passenger routes.
